The representation of female identity has remained one of the most significant concerns in contemporary English literature. Modern and contemporary women writers have increasingly challenged traditional representations of women by presenting female characters as complex individuals with independent desires, ambitions, voices, identities, and social experiences. This study examines the representation of female identity in contemporary English literature with particular attention to gender roles, female agency, sexuality, motherhood, body image, professional identity, cultural expectations, resistance, and intersectionality. The study argues that contemporary English literature has moved beyond stereotypical representations of women as passive, dependent, submissive, or confined to domestic roles. Instead, contemporary literary texts frequently portray women negotiating multiple and sometimes contradictory identities within patriarchal, cultural, social, and economic structures. The research adopts a qualitative approach and uses a descriptive and interpretive research design based on close textual analysis. Selected contemporary English literary works are examined in relation to feminist literary theory, gender studies, identity theory, and intersectionality. The analysis focuses on characterization, narrative voice, language, symbolism, themes, relationships, and representations of the female body. The findings indicate that contemporary literature provides women with greater narrative agency and creates spaces in which female experiences can be expressed, questioned, and redefined. At the same time, many texts demonstrate that female identity continues to be shaped by social expectations, unequal power relations, cultural norms, sexuality, class, race, and family structures. The study concludes that contemporary English literature does not present female identity as fixed or universal; rather, it represents identity as dynamic, contested, socially constructed, and continually negotiated. Contemporary women writers therefore contribute significantly to challenging patriarchal assumptions and broadening literary representations of women's experiences.
