Abstract

Abstract: This article critically examines the use of the flashback technique in Qurratulain Hyder’s celebrated Urdu novel Aag Ka Darya (River of Fire). Flashback is an important narrative device through which past events, memories, historical experiences, and psychological states are brought into the present narrative. In Aag Ka Darya, however, Hyder employs this technique in a much broader and more sophisticated manner than merely recalling earlier events. The novel moves repeatedly between different historical periods, linking ancient India with the Mughal era, British colonial rule, the Partition of India, and the modern period. Through this non-linear treatment of time, the author establishes a strong relationship between individual memory, collective history, cultural identity, and the continuity of civilization. The study explores how flashback contributes to the development of characters such as Gautam, Champa, Kamaluddin, and Cyril by revealing their personal histories, emotional experiences, intellectual conflicts, and social backgrounds. It also analyzes the interaction between flashback and the stream-of-consciousness technique, through which memories emerge from characters’ thoughts, emotions, conversations, places, objects, and historical associations. The study argues that the repeated return to the past enables Hyder to present history not as a closed or forgotten period but as a living force that continues to shape the present. At the same time, the technique enriches the novel’s depiction of cultural transformation, political change, migration, loss, and the search for identity. Thus, flashback in Aag Ka Darya functions not merely as a structural or narrative device but as a significant historical, psychological, philosophical, and cultural strategy. It enables Qurratulain Hyder to challenge linear notions of time and portray human experience as a continuous interaction between past, present, and future.
