This article examines the semantic development of Qur’anic vocabulary through the interaction of Arabic usage, textual context, and exegetical interpretation. It distinguishes historical semantic change from contextual variation, conceptual enrichment, and the subsequent expansion of exegetical explanation. Using a qualitative, comparative approach, the study considers selected passages concerning al-qaryah, al-ummah, al-sabr, and al-huda, alongside relevant discussions in classical lexical and exegetical sources. The analysis argues that multiple meanings within the Qur’an do not, by themselves, establish a chronological transformation of a word. Such a claim requires independently dated linguistic evidence and a defensible account of continuity between earlier and later usage. The selected terms instead reveal different patterns: the relation between settlement and inhabitants, collective identity and exemplary leadership, disciplined perseverance across ethical situations, and differentiated forms of guidance. Comparison between early and later exegetical explanations shows that greater analytical detail may clarify an existing meaning without creating a new one. The article proposes a controlled interpretive method that combines lexical evidence, syntax, immediate context, intertextual comparison, and transmitted explanation, while distinguishing textual meaning from contemporary application.
