In the light of Islamic Sharia, the practice of soliciting food or a treat from friends, relatives, or associates is a matter directly linked to social ethics and economic justice. While Islam strongly encourages generosity and hospitality, it sternly discourages asking others for such things without necessity or becoming a burden upon them. The following is a detailed and research-based study, in the light of Islamic Sharia, regarding the economic and social impacts of soliciting invitations to meals, appearing as an uninvited guest, or imposing oneself on others for a meal—practices known in Arabic as Tufail-gari or Istita'am.
