Abstract

Natural disasters earthquakes, floods, storms, and epidemics are not merely physical or economic events; they inflict deep and lasting damage on the social fabric and family structures of affected communities. This study begins by establishing the lexical and terminological meaning of the word āfah (disaster) in classical Arabic dictionaries, the Qur’an, and Hadith, and explains the Islamic cosmological concept of universal balance (mīzān), within which calamities are understood as a temporary “incidental corruption” (ʿaraḍ mufsid) rather than a permanent feature of creation. It further highlights the contribution of Muslim scholars, particularly al-Khwārizmī’s numerical system, to the systematic historical recording and statistical analysis of past disasters. Building on this theological and historical foundation, the paper undertakes an analytical study of the wide-ranging social consequences of natural disasters: mass loss of life, the forced displacement and migration of survivors, the erosion of social trust and cohesion, and the disintegration of family structures particularly the vulnerability of widows and orphans. Each of these themes is examined through relevant Qur’anic verses, authentic Hadith, classical tafsīr, and contemporary sociological and demographic research drawn from sources such as the UNDP, the World Bank, and the Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre. The study argues that the Prophetic model of muwākhāt (fraternity) established in Madinah, along with the Qur’anic principles of social justice (ʿadl ijtimāʿī) and institutionalized care for the vulnerable, offers a comprehensive and practically tested framework for post-disaster social reconstruction one that integrates material causation with moral and spiritual responsibility. The paper concludes that the Seerah of the Prophet ﷺ provides not only theological consolation but also a concrete socio-economic model capable of addressing the social and familial crises triggered by natural disasters in contemporary societies.
