Abstract

Green innovation has emerged as an important pathway for achieving sustainable development by integrating technological advancement, environmental protection, resource efficiency, and economic progress. It includes the development and adoption of environmentally friendly products, cleaner production processes, renewable-energy technologies, waste-reduction systems, eco-efficient services, and innovative organizational practices that reduce negative environmental impacts. The increasing pressures of climate change, resource depletion, pollution, biodiversity loss, and rapid industrialization have created a need for innovation strategies that can support economic development while maintaining ecological sustainability. Recent research indicates that green innovation can contribute to improved environmental performance, reduced carbon emissions, efficient resource utilization, and sustainable business performance. A 2024 meta-analysis of 80 studies reported positive and significant relationships between overall green innovation, green product innovation, green process innovation, and environmental performance. Research conducted in Pakistan has similarly reported that green innovation and green growth can contribute to environmental sustainability and carbon reductionThis research examines the role of green innovation in sustainable development by focusing on its environmental, economic, technological, and organizational dimensions. The study adopts a qualitative literature-based research approach and synthesizes recent scholarly evidence published between 2023 and 2026. The findings indicate that green innovation can support sustainable development through cleaner technologies, resource efficiency, renewable energy, circular production, green supply chains, and environmentally responsible organizational practices. However, its contribution depends on supportive policies, financial resources, technological capabilities, environmental awareness, institutional capacity, and collaboration among governments, industries, universities, and communities. The study concludes that green innovation should be considered not merely a technological activity but a broader transformation of production, consumption, management, and institutional systems toward long-term sustainability.
