Abstract

Air pollution has become one of the most serious environmental and public-health challenges of the modern world. Rapid urbanization, industrialization, increasing transportation, construction activities, energy production, agricultural practices, and the burning of fossil fuels contribute substantially to deteriorating air quality. Effective monitoring and management of air pollution are therefore essential for identifying major pollutants, assessing exposure levels, protecting public health, and developing appropriate environmental policies. This research examines the importance of air pollution monitoring and management, with particular attention to particulate matter (PM₂.₅ and PM₁₀), nitrogen dioxide (NO₂), sulfur dioxide (SO₂), ozone (O₃), and carbon monoxide (CO). The study reviews conventional monitoring stations, low-cost sensors, remote sensing, geographical information systems, and data-driven approaches as important tools for assessing air quality. The research adopts a qualitative approach based on a systematic review of academic literature, international guidelines, environmental reports, and research studies. The literature indicates that continuous monitoring provides essential information about pollutant concentrations, spatial and temporal variations, emission sources, and population exposure. Recent developments also demonstrate the potential of low-cost sensors, satellite observations, machine learning, and integrated monitoring networks to improve air-quality assessment, particularly in developing countries. WHO identifies monitoring as a fundamental step for understanding population exposure and implementing effective interventions. The study concludes that effective air pollution management requires a combination of reliable monitoring systems, emission-control strategies, public awareness, technological innovation, stronger environmental regulations, and cooperation among government institutions, industries, researchers, and communities.
