Abstract

Water is a fundamental natural resource that supports human health, ecological stability, food production, economic development, and social well-being. However, increasing population, urbanization, industrialization, agricultural activities, climate change, wastewater discharge, and unsustainable extraction are placing substantial pressure on the quality and availability of freshwater resources. Effective water quality management and conservation therefore require an integrated approach that combines pollution prevention, regular monitoring, efficient water use, wastewater treatment, ecosystem protection, institutional governance, and public participation. Recent evidence indicates that water quality remains a major global challenge. UN-Water reported that only 56% of monitored water bodies in 120 reporting countries were classified as having good ambient water quality in 2023, while insufficient monitoring remains a major limitation to effective management.  Recent research also demonstrates the importance of water safety planning, watershed-based management, conservation practices, advanced monitoring, and sustainable governance in improving water quality.  This study proposes an integrated assessment of water quality management and conservation by examining major sources of water pollution, existing monitoring and management practices, conservation strategies, institutional mechanisms, and community participation. A mixed-methods research approach is proposed, combining quantitative assessment of water quality indicators with qualitative information from stakeholders and relevant policy documents. The study will use descriptive statistics, water quality indices, comparative analysis, and thematic analysis to identify major challenges and management opportunities. The anticipated findings are expected to demonstrate that effective water quality conservation depends not only on treatment technologies but also on pollution prevention, sustainable land and water use, continuous monitoring, effective governance, and community awareness. The study is expected to contribute to the development of practical strategies for sustainable water resource management and the protection of water resources for present and future generations.
