Abstract

Climate change and environmental sustainability have emerged as two of the most critical challenges confronting contemporary societies. Increasing global temperatures, changing precipitation patterns, extreme weather events, biodiversity loss, deforestation, water scarcity, pollution, and unsustainable resource consumption are placing substantial pressure on ecological systems and human well-being. This research examines the relationship between climate change and environmental sustainability, with particular attention to the environmental, social, economic, and policy dimensions of climate-related challenges. The study adopts a qualitative research approach and uses a descriptive and exploratory research design based on recent scholarly literature, policy reports, and empirical studies published primarily between 2023 and 2026. The analysis focuses on major climate-change drivers, environmental consequences, sustainable development strategies, renewable energy, environmental education, climate adaptation, mitigation, and institutional responses. The findings indicate that climate change significantly threatens environmental sustainability by accelerating ecosystem degradation, increasing pressure on water and agricultural resources, intensifying natural disasters, and undermining long-term development. However, the literature also demonstrates that renewable energy, green innovation, sustainable resource management, environmental education, climate-resilient infrastructure, afforestation, circular economy practices, and effective climate policies can strengthen environmental sustainability. Recent research on Pakistan particularly emphasizes the country's high vulnerability to floods, heatwaves, water insecurity, glacier-related hazards, and agricultural disruption. The study concludes that environmental sustainability requires an integrated approach in which governments, educational institutions, industries, communities, and individuals jointly participate in climate mitigation and adaptation. Strong environmental governance, climate education, green technologies, renewable energy investment, and climate-resilient development are essential for protecting natural resources and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
