Abstract

Medium through which individuals and communities express cultural identity, values, traditions, beliefs Fashion design is more than the creation of aesthetically attractive garments; it is an important, social experiences, and collective memories. Clothing communicates meanings through colour, fabric, embroidery, motifs, silhouettes, patterns, accessories, and construction techniques. In contemporary society, fashion designers increasingly reinterpret traditional cultural elements within modern designs, creating a dialogue between heritage and innovation. Recent studies demonstrate that fashion can function as a visual language through which cultural identities are preserved, negotiated, transformed, and communicated across generations and geographical boundaries. Digital platforms have further expanded this role by enabling culturally significant fashion practices to reach global audiences through social media and online fashion communities. This study examines fashion design as a medium of cultural expression and communication, with particular attention to the relationship between traditional cultural elements, contemporary fashion, identity formation, and communication. A qualitative research approach with a descriptive and exploratory design is proposed. Secondary literature, fashion examples, cultural design practices, and existing scholarly studies will be analyzed thematically. The study is expected to demonstrate that fashion provides an effective visual and symbolic language for communicating cultural identity while simultaneously allowing traditional heritage to be adapted to contemporary lifestyles. However, globalization, commercialization, cultural appropriation, and loss of authenticity present important challenges. The study concludes that culturally informed fashion design can contribute to cultural preservation, intercultural communication, creative innovation, and the continuation of heritage when cultural elements are represented respectfully and meaningfully
