Abstract

Cultural heritage has become an increasingly important source of inspiration for contemporary apparel design because fashion provides a visible medium through which cultural identity, history, craftsmanship, values, and artistic traditions can be communicated. Contemporary apparel designers are increasingly incorporating traditional textiles, embroidery, motifs, colours, construction techniques, silhouettes, and symbolic elements into modern clothing while adapting them to changing lifestyles, consumer preferences, technological developments, and sustainability concerns. This research examines the influence of cultural heritage on contemporary apparel design and investigates how traditional cultural elements can be transformed into innovative and commercially relevant apparel without losing their original cultural significance. The study adopts a qualitative research approach and uses a descriptive and exploratory research design. Secondary data are collected from academic literature, research articles, fashion case studies, cultural publications, and documented examples of contemporary apparel inspired by traditional craftsmanship. Thematic analysis is used to identify major themes concerning cultural identity, design innovation, sustainability, craftsmanship, commercialization, and cultural authenticity. Recent research demonstrates that traditional motifs, materials, colours, embroidery, weaving, and clothing practices can be transformed into contemporary designs while maintaining connections with cultural narratives. Studies published in 2024 and 2025 also emphasize that cultural heritage can contribute to sustainable fashion by encouraging craft preservation, responsible material use, artisan participation, and longer cultural value in garments. The research concludes that cultural heritage does not restrict contemporary fashion innovation; rather, when interpreted creatively and ethically, it provides designers with a valuable foundation for developing distinctive, meaningful, sustainable, and culturally responsive apparel.
