Abstract

The fashion industry is undergoing a significant transformation as increasing environmental concerns, resource depletion, textile waste, and changing consumer expectations encourage designers to adopt more sustainable practices. This study examines the impact of sustainable fashion practices on modern fashion design, with particular emphasis on the integration of eco-friendly materials, circular design principles, upcycling, recycling, durability, waste reduction, and innovative digital technologies. Sustainable practices are increasingly influencing the way fashion products are conceptualized, developed, produced, consumed, and disposed of, shifting the industry from a traditional linear “take–make–dispose” model toward a more circular and responsible approach. Recent research indicates that design decisions play a critical role in determining the environmental performance and life cycle of fashion products, particularly through material selection, product durability, repairability, recyclability, and end-of-life strategies. Furthermore, emerging technologies such as 3D digital design are creating new opportunities to reduce material waste and improve resource efficiency. This study argues that sustainable fashion practices not only reduce environmental impacts but also encourage creativity, innovation, functionality, and new aesthetic possibilities in contemporary fashion design. However, challenges remain, including higher costs, limited access to sustainable materials and technologies, insufficient industry infrastructure, and gaps in designers’ sustainability knowledge. Overall, the integration of sustainability into modern fashion design represents both an environmental necessity and an opportunity for creative and industrial innovation. The study highlights the importance of collaboration among fashion designers, manufacturers, consumers, educators, policymakers, and technology developers in accelerating the transition toward a more sustainable and circular fashion industry.
