THE ERA OF IMAM ʿALĪ IBN AL-ḤUSAYN ZAYN AL-ʿĀBIDĪN: (A HISTORICAL STUDY OF POLITICAL, SOCIAL, AND SCHOLARLY LIFE)

Abstract

This article examines the period in which Imam Ali ibn al-Husayn Zayn al-Abidin lived. It focuses on its political, economic, social, scholarly, and literary conditions, as well as the Imam’s standing, his relationships with contemporaries, and works attributed to him. Using a descriptive historical approach, it organizes the events and reports contained in the manuscript and considers the relationship between political unrest and scholarly and literary activity. The material indicates that the events at Karbala and the conflicts and uprisings that followed formed an important political backdrop. Accounts of economic inequality, literary life, and scholarship require careful distinction between broad patterns and individual examples. Reports concerning the Imam highlight his knowledge, devotion, and standing among some of his contemporaries. Before definitive historical conclusions can be drawn, however, the reports and quotations must be documented and the dates of certain figures and events verified.
