Abstract

Women’s rights and their social status have remained important areas of discussion in religious, social, legal, and academic studies. Islam introduced a comprehensive framework for the dignity, protection, rights, and responsibilities of women at a time when many societies treated women as socially and legally inferior members of the community. The Qur’an and Sunnah provide fundamental principles concerning women’s spiritual equality, education, property ownership, inheritance, marriage, family life, economic participation, social dignity, and protection from injustice. This study examines the status of women in Islamic society by analyzing major Qur’anic teachings, Prophetic traditions, and relevant scholarly literature. The study focuses particularly on the principles of human dignity, equality in spiritual accountability, economic rights, matrimonial rights, inheritance, education, and participation in social life. It also distinguishes between Islamic teachings and cultural practices that may negatively affect women but are sometimes incorrectly presented as religious requirements. The study adopts a qualitative, descriptive, and analytical research approach based primarily on textual analysis of the Qur’an, selected Hadith literature, classical Islamic scholarship, and contemporary academic studies. The findings indicate that Islam recognizes women as independent moral and legal persons and grants them rights and responsibilities within a balanced framework of family and society. Islamic teachings emphasize mutual respect, justice, compassion, consultation, and responsibility between men and women. The study concludes that the proper implementation of Islamic principles can contribute to the dignity, security, education, economic empowerment, and social well-being of women. However, the realization of these rights requires a clear distinction between authentic Islamic teachings and customs or social practices that conflict with the principles of justice and human dignity.
