Abstract

Idara Uloom al-Qur'an, Aligarh, formally inaugurated in October 2004, though conceived as early as 1983, emerged from the intellectual legacy of Madrasat al-Islah and the Farahi–Islahi school of Qur'anic thought. Since 1985, the institute has published its biannual journal, Uloom al-Qur'an, a scholarly platform that, over the past two decades, has featured research articles, book reviews, bibliographies, indices, and seminar reports related to the Qur'an and its allied disciplines. This article examines the institute's establishment, its stated objectives, and—most importantly—the special issue of the journal devoted to "Qur'anic Sciences in the Twentieth Century," which emerged from a two-day seminar held at the Idara on 26–27 July 2005. Twenty-nine research papers were presented at the seminar, surveying a century of scholarship on disciplines such as tajwīd, tafsīr methodology, iʿjāz al-Qur'an, naẓm al-Qur'an, Qur'anic lexicography, translation studies, and contemporary approaches to Qur'anic guidance. The article argues that this special issue represents one of the most comprehensive academic surveys of twentieth-century Qur'anic studies available in Urdu and situates it within the broader corpus of the Idara's publications, including its Qur'anic Āyāt Reference Library.
