Abstract

This article critically examines the art of sketch writing in the works of Saadat Hasan Manto and highlights the distinctive features of his literary technique. The study explores how Manto transformed traditional sketch writing by combining realism, psychological analysis, human sympathy, and emotional depth. Unlike conventional biographical sketches, Manto's portraits present individuals as complex human beings shaped by social, psychological, and emotional experiences. Through an analytical study of his major sketch collections, particularly Ganjay Farishtay and Loud Speaker, the article demonstrates that Manto focused not only on the external characteristics of his subjects but also on their inner conflicts, hidden motivations, and emotional struggles. His association with the literary and film worlds enabled him to observe human behavior closely and portray it with remarkable authenticity. The study further argues that Manto's realistic approach, combined with his psychological insight and compassionate understanding of human nature, established a new tradition in Urdu sketch writing. Consequently, his sketches continue to occupy a significant position in Urdu literature and remain an important source for understanding human personality and social realities.
